Mel is our cat. We were happily non-pet people until he walked out of a tree in our backyard and decided to move in. Mel’s been RVing with us for years now, and what we immediately learned is that litter box storage in a compact RV is always going to be a challenge. While we hadn’t realized it yet when we bought our EKKO, turns out the EKKO is a perfect RV for cats. There is an exterior storage compartment that has a passive vent leading to the interior. With some mods to the cabinet itself, and a pet door in the place of the vent, Mel now has an awesome executive washroom that keeps litter out of the living area, and is easily accessible to Mel whenever he needs to powder his nose. This first video is the easy part... replacing the vent cover with a pet door. https://www.thefitrv.com/rv-tips/adding-an-rv-cat-door-mels-private-restroom/ Originally, we just removed the vent cover and he would access it that way. But the vent hole was a bit small, and Mel had to really work at it to get through. Also, it didn’t look finished— and as a woodworker that wasn’t going to fly. So, we bought a cat door and I installed it (see video in link above). Now, the hole is bigger and Mel has no issues getting through. It also looks a lot better than just the edges of cut plywood. An added bonus is that any litter box odors are better held in place with the litter box. In the second video over on TheFitRV, called “RV Mod Using My CNC Router”, you’ll see how I finished the cabinet interior itself to hold the litter box, and to provide storage for extra litter and trays. https://www.thefitrv.com/rv-tips/rv-mod-using-my-new-cnc-router/ I used a CNC router to wall off half of the cabinet, but you certainly don’t need a CNC router to do this mod. I had just gotten mine and was happy to have an excuse to test it out. Many other EKKO owners have since followed suit and done this mod, no router required. We’ve actually been surprised to see so many other EKKO cat owners following this mod. Didn’t realize so many others are out there RVing with cats… so cool! Makes me happy to know lots of other cats are RVing out there with executive feline washrooms in their EKKOs too.
