Removed a closet and built a floating shelf | Forest River Wildwood

We removed the closet to the left of the bed so we could flip the mattress sideways to open up the center area of the camper. We then added the storage back in by building a floating shelf above the window. The shelf was longer and deeper than the original shelf that was above the bed. We also added a 2nd light so two adults in the bed could have a reading light if wanted. We make floating shelves with a 2x4 that we rip down to 1.5", usually the 2x2's are very warped, so this is a better option. We attached the long support board it to the wall where the framing joist was and to the cabinet on the other side with Kreg screws. We also screw this board to the wall where the framing studs were. You can find the studs with a stud finder or look for the vertical staple holes in the wall panel. Then we cut the support pieces out of the same ripped 2x4. The number we use depends on how long the shelf is, if light wring needs to go through these pieces we drill 1/2 holes into those boards before attaching them. Then they are Kreg screwed into the main support board. The two end pieces are secured to the cabinet on the left and the framing stud on the right side. To keep the shelf lightweight we used 1/4" plywood for the top and bottom of the shelf and a pine 1 x 4 for the front face of the shelf. We made sure there is a lip at the top of the shelf to keep the baskets from falling off.
